The UCLA Academic Senate failed to pass both a vote to censure and a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Gene Block in its Thursday meeting. 
The resolution of no confidence in Block received 43% of votes in favor, and the resolution to censure Block received 50% of votes in favor, according to an email sent to senate faculty from Linda Sarna, the senate’s secretary.

Around 200 students and community members gathered at the base of Janss Steps on Wednesday to commemorate 76 years of Palestinian resistance.
Nakba Day – which is May 15, the day after the 1948 Israeli Declaration of Independence – recognizes the forcible displacement of around 700,000 Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, according to the Associated Press.

Abel Valenzuela Jr. will be the next dean of the UCLA College Division of Social Sciences, removing the interim status from the post he’s held since September 2022. 
Valenzuela joined UCLA’s faculty 30 years ago, now holding appointments in Chicana/o and Central American studies, labor studies and urban planning. 
He previously chaired the Department of Chicana/o and Central American studies, directed the Center for the Study of Urban Poverty and was special advisor to the chancellor on immigration policy.

UCLA faculty have heightened concerns over the integrity of the Academic Senate’s process to potentially issue an unprecedented no-confidence vote in Chancellor Gene Block, following documents released amid the fallout from Friday’s emergency meeting.

In a recording sent to a UCLA political science students’ GroupMe, a person claiming to be a candidate for the Undergraduate Students Association Council suggested bulldozing the Palestine solidarity encampment and shooting its participants.

The UCLA Academic Senate will continue consideration of a vote to censure or a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Gene Block into its next meeting May 16 amid a lack of consensus from voting faculty. 
The former, current and incoming chairs of the UCLA Academic Senate – Jessica Cattelino, Andrea Kasko and Kathy Bawn, respectively – released a statement Tuesday announcing the emergency two-hour teleconference senate legislative assembly meeting.

Around 100 members of the United Auto Workers Local 4811 Union gathered in the Court of Sciences on Thursday to discuss an upcoming strike authorization vote in response to UCLA’s recent decisions regarding the now-dispersed Palestine solidarity encampment. 
The union – which represents UC academic student employees, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars – announced Monday that it will vote May 13 to 15 to authorize a strike.

The Undergraduate Students Association Council passed a resolution Tuesday night calling for the resignation of Chancellor Gene Block if he does not meet the demands of the Palestine solidarity encampment.
