From behind their viewfinders, Daily Bruin Photo staffers recall the stories of pictures they took this past year, ranging from protests to socially distanced portraits and sports games in empty stadiums.
With COVID-19 restrictions easing in California, amusement parks, local businesses and UCLA’s campus have begun to return to normal functioning compared to one year ago.
The No. 2 seeded Bruins battled their way through a three-day Pac-12 tournament championship on their home courts at Mapes Beach. The blue and gold would sweep their first two opponents, No. 7 seed Washington and No. 3 seed Arizona, to land a spot in the championship against crosstown rivals and No. 1 seed USC after beating the Trojans earlier in the winner’s bracket final. UCLA’s championship dreams fell on the shoulders of freshmen Rileigh Powers and Jaden Whitmarsh. The duo pulled through to give the Bruins the 3-2 edge over the Trojans.
A photographer’s ability to cover athletics in the midst of a pandemic is a reflection of three traits: ample preparation, adaptability and awareness.
As a Photo editor this year, I have witnessed the COVID-19 pandemic throw control out the window.
Victorious in all but one event, UCLA swim and dive defeated Fresno State in the first and only home meet of the season. The Bruins also hosted Utah and UNLV in the 2021 Bruin Diving Invitational at Spieker Aquatics Center.
The Bruins bested the Golden Bears. UCLA women’s basketball defeated California on Saturday in its third Pac-12 victory. Redshirt senior guard Natalie Chou had her best performance of the season with 18 points.
